Citizen science as a tool for forest lichen survey: gains, limits and challenges

Citizen science have been successful tool to quantify epiphytic macro-lichens in urban areas (related to air pollution), while its potential to survey lichen diversity and distribution in forest land is less known. Recent citizen science campaign „Attention! Be ready! Lichen!!“ collected photo-based data of lichens from forest and cut-over sites in Estonia. Summing up results, I will discuss about gains and limitations of citizen science approach to survey distribution and status of forest lichens.
