Mining carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using wetland ecosystems

Dr. Kuno Kasak (Tartu Ülikool/ University of Tartu)

Wetlands are one of the key ecosystems to sequester carbon dioxide and mitigate climate change. However, the ability of individual plants and wetlands to capture carbon from the atmosphere is limited by laws of physics and ecological principles. Even with the most productive ecosystems the rates and amount of net carbon uptake are slow and depend on the release of other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Therefore, we are looking for solutions to maximise carbon uptake and minimise the emission of methane and nitrous oxide in both natural and restored wetlands.
