Most land plants and many soil fungi have evolved to collaborate, and the functioning of these underworld mutually-beneficial networks has reached almost mythological status in the popular press. Here I disentangle fact from fiction and describe the key roles played by root-fungal interactions in driving ecosystem functions.

Trait diversity in plants occurs also within individuals, at the organ level. Phenotypic subindividual diversity in plants has potential evolutionary consequences that have remained unexplored. I will present how subindividual diversity in plants might be linked to plant evolutionary processes.
