Succulent plants: adapting to extreme environments

Fascinating examples of succulent plants attract a wide range of interest, from enthusiasts and collectors to plant biologists. Succulence has evolved repeatedly in the plant kingdom, in response to environmental factors such as drought, freezing or high salinity. Adaptation to these extreme environments requires adjustments to optimize photosynthesis, water storage and transport. In a scenario of global climate change, the diversity of succulent plants has been proposed as a resource still needing to be explored. In this seminar I will share some examples of eco-physiological adaptation in succulents from drought-prone areas, looking into their different ways of coping with stress.
