Underworld networks: why soil fungi matter for life on Earth

Most land plants and many soil fungi have evolved to collaborate, and the functioning of these underworld mutually-beneficial networks has reached almost mythological status in the popular press. Here I disentangle fact from fiction and describe the key roles played by root-fungal interactions in driving ecosystem functions.
